Appraiser

Appraisers are licensed in South Dakota as: “State-registered”, (75 pre-license hours), “State-licensed”, (150 pre-license hours), “State-certified residential”, (200 pre-license hours), or “State-certified general” (300 pre-license hours).

For a State Certified Residential Appraiser license:
In addition to the Appraisal course requirements you will also need to have successfully completed 30 semester hours of college-level education, from an accredited college, junior college, community college, or university. The college or university must be a degree-granting institution accredited by the Commission on Colleges, a regional or national accreditation association, or by an accrediting agency that is recognized by the U. S. Secretary of Education.

For a State Licensed Appraiser License:
In addition to the Appraisal course requirements you also must hold a bachelor’s degree, or higher, from an accredited college or university. The college or university must be a degree-granting institution accredited by the Commission on Colleges, a regional or national accreditation association, or by an accrediting agency that is recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

The following classes, available online and provided by Career WebSchool, will fulfill the 75-hours of education needed to become a “State-registered” appraiser for the State of South Dakota:

  • “Basic Appraisal Principles” (30 hours)
  • “Basic Appraisal Procedures” (30 hours)
  • “Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice and Ethics” (15 hours)

Upon completion of these courses, you must apply with the South Dakota Department of Revenue and Regulation to take the National exam. Once you pass the exam, you apply for your “State-registered” appraisal certificate from the South Dakota Department of Revenue and Regulation.
